Design Details

Keon Park Station is an unstaffed station on Melbourne’s Mernda Line and forms part of the Keon Parade Level Crossing Removal Project, commissioned by the Level Crossing Removal Project and delivered by the North West Program Alliance.

The design is guided by the idea of a “virtual landscape” – born out of a desire to provide a day 1 established landscape precinct despite impact on the existing ground plane of such an intense and substantial piece of engineering driven infrastructure.

Curved walls clad in ceramic green and yellow tiles in four tones wrap the concourse beneath the viaduct. The colours and pattern emulate the ephemeral qualities of an adjacent landscape characterised by two contrasting eucalypt species —one smooth‑barked lemon scented gum, one dark and coarse iron bark. The virtual landscape pattern echoes not just the colour – but the striated and textural volume enhanced by shifting shadows. The tiles are distinctly optimistic as well as being an incredibly durable, low‑maintenance finish which reduces ongoing upkeep and cost.
